Mamula Island — officially named Lastavica (meaning "swallow" in Montenegrin) but universally known as Mamula after its fortress — sits between the Luštica and Prevlaka peninsulas at the very entrance to the Bay of Kotor. It is approximately 200 metres in diameter, and the circular stone fortress covers roughly 90% of the island's surface. There is no public ferry; the island is reachable only by private boat, tour boat, or hotel transfer.
Most visitors encounter Mamula on the Blue Cave speedboat tour from Kotor: boats slow near the fortress while the skipper narrates its story — the 1853 Austrian garrison, the WWII Italian camp, the Cold War abandonment, the luxury hotel — before continuing to the submarine tunnels and the Blue Cave swim. Many visitors say they didn't know the camp's history until that moment; the narration is one of the most memorable parts of the circuit. Knowing the layers in advance makes the view far richer.
